Trattoria San Lorenzo

Trattoria San Lorenzo is right next to the Piazza di San Lorenzo (hence the name). We found this place because it was close to our flat and had very good reviews. It had the 4.5 star 1.1k review combo on google reviews, so we had to go. The atmosphere is great, and it is usually busy inside. I went to this restaurant twice, and it had one of those memorable dishes which I will get into.

In terms of appetizers I got the crostini al pate one of the times I went. It was a solid take on the classic Florentine app. The pate was solid, but it was nothing to write home about. Wouldn’t order it again.

I usually talk about the primi (pasta) second, but I’m going to save that for last. The first time I went to Trattoria di San Lorenzo, I went with a buddy and we were starving. The “Grigliata di San Lorenzo” or the San Lorenzo Barbecue immediately caught our eye. I was amped to eat this as it boasted a little bit of pork, beef, and sausage. However, I was let down. Some of the meat was too chewy, and I just flat out wasn’t a fan of it. Nothing worse than being let down by the main course, but you can’t win them all. Wasn’t worth the $32 euro.

Now the upside, let me get into the pasta. The carbonara at this spot was incredible. There were thick chunks of pork belly, and the sauce was a bit creamy and had a little tang from the pecorino. The black pepper on top enhanced everything. The spaghetti was really soft and easy to eat. Everything worked in this carbonara. My only complaint is that I wish I ordered two of them, it was really that good.  As they’d say in Italian, era buonissimo.

Takeaways: Come here for the carbonara, it is fantastic. It’s making me hungry thinking about it.

Score: 7.2/10
